Isn't going Vegan just too extreme?
|
Main Entry: veg·an
Pronunciation: 'vE-g&n
Function: noun
Etymology: by contraction from vegetarian
: a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or dairy products; also : one who abstains from using animal products (as leather)
- veg·an·ism
The definition of "vegan" listed above from Merriam-Webster's Dictionary is very clear. Vegans choose not to use, wear, or consume any animal products. Veganism means choosing to live without, as much as possible and practical, all forms of suffering, exploitation, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, entertainment or any other purpose. This includes products that are tested on animals, and includes animal-produced products such as honey. Understanding what veganism means is the easy part. People often become confused or judgemental when it comes to the "why?"
The most common reason for choosing a vegan lifestyle is because of the cruel practices that take place in dairy, livestock and poultry factory farming. Many other reasons include health, ecological, or religious/spiritual reasons.
To fully understand why more and more people are choosing veganism, you must first have some basic information about the suffering of animals. Please click on the images below to find out more about each area and to see photos and video footage filled with facts.
